Climate explained

Climate is…

…the term for the average atmospheric conditions. It is measured by several factors: Temperature, humidity, precipitation, atmospheric pressure and wind.

Weather is measured by the same factors, but refering to it on a daily basis and describing the condition for a short period only. Temperature, rainfall and wind are the main common used describers.

Simply said: Climate is the long-term average of weather, usually by a period of 30 years.

Weather vs. climate

“Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get” as per the National Weather Service Office Tucson, Arizona.

The Koeppen-Geiger model is the most common used climate classification, which classifies the following 5 main groups:

  • Tropical Climates
  • Dry / Desert Climates
  • Temperate Climates
  • Continental / Snow Climates
  • Polar / Alpine Climates
